South Carolina Highway
Patrol - School Bus Safety
Please be
advised that the law has changed with regard to when a person must stop
for a school bus (see the attached release). The new law no longer
requires motorists to stop when traveling in the
opposing direction of the bus on a
multi-lane (2 or more lanes on each side of the road)
highway or private road. This
provision is possible because of the other major change in the law.
The new
law requires that no student be allowed
to cross a multi-lane highway to get on or off the bus. The
student will be unloaded or will board next to the curb. The old law did
not contain that provision.
Under the
new law, students will
continue to cross the street on two-lane highways (one lane in each
direction), and traffic
in both directions (meeting the bus and following it) still
must stop. In all situations where motorists encounter a bus and children,
we urge them to always slow down and proceed with caution.
The
penalty for violating this provision is over $1,000 and 30 days in jail.
