South Carolina Department of Public Safety

South Carolina Highway Patrol -- Message from the Colonel

Welcome to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The Highway Patrol is the largest law enforcement division in South Carolina with more than 800 troopers. We serve more than 2.9 million licensed drivers and thousands of visiting drivers and tourists each day. The Highway Patrol’s mission is to make our highways safer through strong, high visibility enforcement and public education.

We are divided into seven geographic regions of the state called Troops to best serve you. Our troopers receive extensive training on everything from enforcement strategies to advanced collision investigation. Our duty is to enforce the traffic laws of South Carolina in a professional and fair manner. We conduct and participate in numerous public safety campaigns each year to stress the importance of safe driving. The Highway Patrol has a team of community relations officers throughout the state dedicated to educating the media and public about safe driving behaviors. If you would like to request a speaker to visit your church, school, business or civic organization, please click here for more information. If you would like for one of our community relations officers to visit your daycare or business to demonstrate the proper use of child safety seats, please contact us here.

Every year in South Carolina more than 1,000 people die on our highways and another 52,000 are injured. The fiscal impact is staggering but it pales in comparison to the emotional devastation that families suffer after losing a loved one on our highways. We have created a Fatality Memorial Web site as an avenue for families to post memorials to their loved ones lost on South Carolina highways. If you have lost a family member on South Carolina highways and would like to honor their memory, please consider visiting our web site and posting a memorial to your loved one.

As you drive on our highways, please remember that you – the driver – are the single most important factor in ensuring your safety, your passengers’ safety as well that of fellow travelers. The majority of collisions are due to driver error. That means taking simple precautions will maximize your chances of avoiding serious injury and surviving a crash. I urge you to always wear your safety belt and ensure all others, especially child passengers, are buckled up properly as well. Obey the speed limit. Travel when rested and never drink and drive.

It is the Highway Patrol’s privilege to serve the traveling public in our state. If you have questions, concerns or suggestions about the Highway Patrol, please contact us at 803-896-7920.

Sincerely,
Col. H. A. Stubblefield
Highway Patrol Commander
