Ptl. Harry Boyd Ray 9/7/1958 Patrolman Ray was on duty in Orangeburg County when he pulled over a vehicle for speeding. Unbeknown to Patrolman Ray, the three assailants in the vehicle had just committed armed robbery of a motel nearby. Patrolman Ray was killed instantly when he was shot several times. Two of the assailants were sentenced to death and the other served a ten year sentence. Patrolman Ray was a native of Spartanburg County and an eleven year veteran of the Patrol. Patrolman Ray had two brothers, one being a patrolman and the other a police officer.
