Welcome to the SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY PATROL website

SCHP Community Relations Office

What We Do

The Community Relations Office is a vital link between the public, media and the Highway Patrol. Our office includes media relations, public relations, and community outreach and safety education. The Highway Patrol believes strongly that safety outreach and education programs work hand-in-hand with enforcement efforts. Our goal is to positively influence driving behavior thus reducing collisions and fatalities. We do this by using safety presentations and materials to illustrate risks and consequences of certain driving behaviors. We also provide an avenue for families who have lost someone in a collision to share their stories with others.

We have nine troopers who serve as Community Relations Officers (CROs). At least one CRO is located in each Highway Patrol Troop throughout the state (there are seven geographic Troops). CROs serve as a media spokesperson, child safety seat technician and safety educator. CROs reach out to all areas of the community – schools, businesses and churches – to disseminate safety messages. The primary goal of a CRO is to distribute timely information to the news media regarding traffic information/collisions, provide safety education for the state’s drivers and to forge a positive relationship between the Highway Patrol and the communities we serve.
